2013-2014 Scripture Readings

Joshua 1:8 says "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success." So in order to meditate on God's law let us read his Word every day.
Middle School students please read half a chapter a day five days a week beginning in Romans and proceeding through the letters you didn't read last year.

Mandatory Chattanooga Letter writing meeting at LCS computer room Sunday April 14th 7pm

Please bring at least 20 addresses of folks you'd like to pray for us on our trip. We'll be crafting, writing, and mailing our letters that night. The church will provide the postage, envelopes, and paper.

Did I mention this is MANDATORY! I'm serious. If you don't come, you don't come. If you have a conflict, change it. If you've seriously tried to change it already, feel free to contact me so we can figure things out.

We'll be working on this until we finish it. I imagine that could take about two hours.

30 hour famine

Hey fellow famine fighters,
We're fasting to feed the hungry beginning at 12 noon on friday April 12th. You'll have to begin the fast on your own but, come 8pm, we can fast together. Bring your sleeping bag and cardboard box of your choice and we'll sleep like the homeless hungry, outside on the front lawn. (If it rains we'll move inside to the block house and the church.)
We'll begin with a time of worship and bible study on Friday night. Then we'll break for free time and games.
We'll go to sleep and the next morning it gets tricky:
Those 14 and under and anyone wishing to join Nick and the leaders will be going to Baltimore's Christian Community Center to play the TRIBE game of hunger awareness with the inner-city kids. We'll leave at 9:30 am and return by 1:00 pm.
Those who already signed up to go with Mr. Geof and the battalion to Our Daily Bread will be leaving the church to there to serve food to the homeless. That means several of you over-14-year-olds have a decision to make which project you'll be going to. Please email me ASAP to let me know.
Next we'll return to the church to continue fasting, learning about hunger, getting sponsors, playing some more hunger games, and taking a nap. Then we'll work on making dinner for our breakfast at 6pm in the Fellowship Hall. Parents if you'd like to donate or make food for this break-fast please let Kelly Bohmer riverotter11@msn.com or Sarah Kraus know, they are coordinating that part of it.
We'll be all done eating in 15 minutes. I told you it was going to be a break-FAST. And then we'll clean up quickly and hopefully be out of there by 6:30pm.

Even if you haven't gotten any sponsors yet, please come and fast with us, we'll raise the money together for the hungry on Saturday.

Youth Leadership

This is a reminder that we are starting our new series of Leadership training starting at 5pm this Sunday in the block house. Since every mature Christian influences others and since a Christian leader must at least be a mature Christian we will devote our time together, every other week, to studying a classic work on what it's like to be a mature Christian. That book "The Christian's Daily Walk" can be found online for free here: http://books.google.com/books?id=mOsOAAAAIAAJ&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false

If you're wondering why we're reading such an old book (besides the fact that it's free) you can read this wonderful little article on why we should read old books. They help us to see our cultural bias.

C.S. Lewis article "On the Reading of Old Books" http://www.theelliots.org/Soapbox2008/OntheReadingofOldBooks.pdf

I have bread, peanut butter, jam, and baby carrots to offer you for dinner (there's also usually some left over provender in the kitchen.) If you'd like anything else for dinner please feel free to bring it yourself.

In addition to talking about Christian Maturity we will be brainstorming some ideas for youth group.

Chattanooga Information meeting and spring schedule

This Sunday there will be a informational meeting regarding the Chattanooga Mission Trip at 9:30 am in the block house. Parents and youth are welcome to attend. We will have Sunday School afterwards.

Sunday School: Continuing on as usual. Middle School is studying and reading through Acts and some of the letters of the apostles. See our weekly bulletin or scroll down on this blog for reading recommendations. Middle School boys and girls meet separately in the Middle School wing of Liberty Christian School 9:30am on Sunday mornings. High School is studying and reading through the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible.) See our weekly bulletin or scroll down for reading recommendations. High School meets in the little white building beside church, the block house, at 9:30am Sunday Mornings.

Youth Leadership: February 10th at 5pm in the block house we'll start a new leadership series that will meet biweekly before youth group. Youth of any age are welcome to attend as we study Christian Maturity and brainstorm about youth ministry ideas.  However those coming to the leadership meeting are expected to have read the chapter from our book to discuss.  The book we will be studying is called "The Christian's Daily Walk" by Henry Scudder. The ebook is available online for free through google books. Read chapter 1 for February 10th. A dinner of sandwiches will be provided.  You're welcome to bring something to share.

Youth Group: February 10th at 6:30pm in the block house 6th-12th grade students are invited to come sing praises, pray, study, and play with us. We have Wii, foosball, basketball, and soccer. We'll continue our look at why to believe in God at a new time for the spring, 6:30-8pm. Starting in March we'll begin to take a look at how to study the bible and how to interpret the bible.  We'll be doing group projects to interpret the bible. I highly recommend picking up a copy of R.C. Sproul's "Knowing Scripture." It is very easy to read and helps decode Bible interpretation.

Spring Charge: March 1st 5pm - March 3rd 3pm marks our annual trip to Furnace Bay as a youth group.  Middle and High School students are welcome to join us for a fun-filled weekend of learning. Don Dove, pastor of nearby Living Hope PCA, will be speaking to us about God's Word, teaching us how to read and interpret the Bible. We stay in a historic lodge and make all of our own wonderful meals. We play games and enjoy beautiful views of the Chesapeake Bay. Don't miss this opportunity. Only $50! Pay your $25 deposit by February 17th to Liberty church.

Chattanooga Mission Trip: July 13-20 We'll be returning to Tennessee to lead bible clubs, do construction and minister in the inner city. This year we'll be going alongside Annapolis EP. The cost is $400 per person. The trip is open to high schoolers and parents. If you're interested please fill out a registration packet posted on the youth bulletin board or at umt participant packet.

30 Hour Famine: April 12-13 We'll be fasting to feed the hungry.  You can pick up your fundraising packet now to start getting sponsors to donate for each hour that you fast.  $30 feeds a child for a month. The fast itself starts at noon on Friday but then we'll get together at 8pm at church for a sleepover. Bring a cardboard box to sleep outside if you wish. In the morning we'll be doing a service project before returning to church. We'll then break our fast together at 6pm in the fellowship hall. Here's our website to set up online donations: http://support.worldvision.org/site/TR/30HourFamine/30HourFamine?team_id=48525&pg=team&fr_id=2020

Baccalaureate: May 26th at 1pm we'll celebrate high school seniors that have just graduated.  Parents prepare a few words to say about or to your graduate. We will give them a gift and a charge. Immediately following worship we'll meet in the fellowship hall for a light lunch and then proceed upstairs for the Baccalaureate at 1pm. Contact Nick to see what you can bring to share.
